On 2 October, live from Japan, the D1 Grand Prix finally arrives in the UK. Spectators can see the original and best Drifters demonstrate their skills in the latest and greatest racing machines. With world class action from Japan's top drivers competing against talented UK drivers specially selected for this event by the D1 Corporation, spectators will experience amazing speeds, breathtaking on-track battles and burning rubber like they've never seen before!
Combining techniques from autocross, rally and road racing, Drifting is fast, furious and totally addictive! It's also the latest and most extreme track event for modified and performance streetcar enthusiasts in the UK.
Drivers reach speeds of around 80 - 100mph before initiating a "Drift" - using maximum power, minimum braking and precise counter steering to slide the car as sideways as possible for as long as possible round the circuit, linking slides and turns into one fluid, controlled movement. Performance is judged on speed, angle of attack, execution and style rather than just who finishes the fastest.
All drivers will make solo runs before eliminations start and the best 16 are selected. In the spectacular finale, these 16 drivers will run door handle-to-door handle, competing with each other on the circuit at the same time, fighting for space as they try to out nerve each other and pull off the ultimate drift. Following the thrill of the solo runs, these drift showdowns really ignite the crowd and bring them to their feet with excitement
Drifting has been recognised in Japan for the last 30 years, but has become hugely popular there in the last 15 years and is now a fully established national sport. In 2001 the D1 Grand Prix was created, representing the highest level of competition in the sport. With competitions in America and popularity and recognition rapidly growing in Europe, Drifting is poised to take the world by storm.
